 Hoping that all families have had a wonderful Holiday Season and a restful break for the students. Now it’s time for our class to get back together to continue with our Fifth-Grade year. I’d like to thank all parents for your support the past year. It takes everyone to make the year successful! Time goes by very quickly (even though some students will disagree with me), and the end of the year is not far away. Please continue to encourage your child to try harder in this new year. In class this week, each student will make New Year Learning Resolutions. They will come up with ways to achieve and maintain that goal. At home, you can also help your child to set up goals for this new year and motivate them to achieve those goals. Some examples are: Perfect attendance, perfect homework, at least 30 minutes of reading a day, clean up room once a week, homework before TV… and many other positive goals that the family can achieve together. 2nd TRIMESTER PROGRESS REPORT 2nd Trimester Progress Report is going home with your child this Wednesday, January 8, 2020 showing the current status of your child in class. We will have many more activities, assignments, and projects to complete. These grades could go up or down, depending on the work your child does between now and at the end of Trimester 3 (Feb. 21, 2020). Please look over and either encourage your child to continue doing good work or talk about trying their best in all assignments, turning in all classwork and homework. i-Ready scores and AR progress will also be included with the Progress Report. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. PARENT-STUDENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES Our 2nd Trimester PST Conferences will begin this week from January 8-10 for the first round. Requests were sent to Parents on the REMIND app to sign up for a day and time. If you did not receive a request and would like to have a conference, please let me know and I will schedule a second round the week after on January 15-17. Thank you. I-READY, LEXIA/READING PLUS PRACTICE Our class has been using i-Ready, Lexia, and Reading Plus in class for reading/math improvement. Students are assigned practices to do at school and at home. These programs offer practice, exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning path that empower students to study at their own pace, at their level, in and outside of the classroom. Please have your child work on these programs for at least 20 minutes everyday. The logins are on our class page under “Class Links” The more they practice, the better they will be! JANUARY: WATERCOLORS This year, during “Art Appreciation” time each week, the students learn about lines, shapes, colors, techniques, perspectives, and other concepts. We also explore art styles from art masters and then create our own art using those styles. Studies have shown that involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skills. Art learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork. Finally, drawing, painting, and creating arts can be a relaxing, non-pressure activity that refreshes the mind. Please purchase an inexpensive set of watercolors for your child at stores like Walmart, Michael’s, Office Depot, or online at Amazon. * In the case students don’t have the supplies, not to worry, I will have enough materials for them to use. STEM 2020 As the first half of the year STEM program was about hands-on building activities, the second half projects will be mostly on computers, electronics, and robotics. In January, we will build game consoles with Raspberry Pi mini-computers. We will also create our own personal websites to post assignments as well as play games!!! It’s going be a lot of fun!  Our Class would like to thank families that had donated goodies to our Winter Carnival’s “Santa Store” on December 20th. We couldn’t have a successful Carnival without these treats. We also like to thank those parents that came to our classroom to share the fun with us. We had a great time at the Class Carnival. The year-end carnival will be on May 26, 2020!
Thank you so much students and parents for the generous gifts that I have received including candies, cookies, mugs… and especially the gift-cards/cash that will be used directly for our classroom! I feel so lucky and blessed to have a great group of students this year and parents that support us. Let’s have a wonderful NEW YEAR together!
