Our class will be having our Winter Carnival on December 21st. We need your help to make our Winter Carnival successful and brings lots of joy to the students. Our Carnival Store needs chips, cookies, candies, sodas, juice, cupcakes, popcorn, etc…so the students can “purchase” with their tickets.
Any donation you can contribute to the Carnival Store will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Note: With the Closed Campus Policy in effect, if you want to visit our classroom, please let me know. Your name must be on the list at the office before you can be admitted.
WINTER BREAK ASSIGNMENTS
Although we are taking a break from school, don’t take a break from learning. Please read for 30 minutes and 20 minutes of Khan Academy and/or Lexia/Reading Plus homework everyday.
Amidst the fun and celebrations, please don’t forget to read and complete the math and reading online assignments. Thank you!
THANK YOU PARENTS
As we approach the half way point of our 5th grade year, I would like to express my appreciation to all parents for encouraging and supporting your child and our class through these 5 months. We cannot be successful without the support of our parents. Please continue to work together and be strong for your child’s learning achievement and well-being. THANK YOU!
This year, during “Art Appreciation” time each week, the students learn about lines, shapes, colors, techniques, perspectives, and other concepts. We also explore art styles from art masters and then create our own art using those styles. Studies have shown that involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skills. Art learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and team work. Finally, drawing, painting, and creating arts can be a relaxing, non-pressure activity that refreshes the mind. Continuing with our art schedule, in January, we will be using watercolor. I am asking parents to please purchase a set of watercolor for your child. You can find inexpensive sets at Michael’s, Office Depot, or Wal-Mart. In the case you cannot purchase the supplies, not to worry, I will have watercolors for your child to use.
If you would like to send additional items for those students who may not be able to acquire any, your donation will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
CLASS CARNIVAL STORE
Our Class Carnival will be on December 21st. Our Carnival Store needs chips, cookies, candies, sodas, juice, cupcakes, popcorn, etc…so the students can “purchase” with their tickets. Any donation you can contribute to the Carnival Store will be greatly appreciated. More information to come. Thank you!
Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Winter testing for 5th Graders continues this week. The students will be tested in Reading Language Arts, Math, and Science.
MAP testing is important because it is an indicator of your child’s progress and what level he/she is at comparing to 5th grade skills. Therefore, it is important for your child not to be absent during MAP testing. Please schedule appointments after the school day if possible.
Please encourage your child to do the best they can on these tests and make sure the students get plenty of sleep every night along with a good breakfast each morning. Thank you for your support.
FLEA MARKET FRIDAY #2
Our class will hold our 2nd “Flea Market Friday” in the classroom on December 7. The purpose is to use our Class Money to buy (and/or sell) little trinkets and other knick-knacks. During the process of buying and selling, students are required to calculate prices, add, subtract, divide, multiply, give correct change, and wisely use their money to make more money or to buy things they like. This is a great way to learn how to run a business and the “art” of selling. It is also a part of applying Common Core State Standards to real-life activities in the classroom.
Students are NOT ALLOWED to bring anything of value, rather, they can bring extra toys they have, playing cards, old games, books, and other used “stuff” that they have and want to sell. Students can also sell special skills they have like coloring, drawings, origami, making bookmarks, or other demonstrations.
We will have a fun learning experience in our Flea Market. THANK YOU for your support.
SECRET SANTA BEGINS
"Secret Santa" begins this week until Dec. 20 to promote the “Giving” character of December, and to celebrate the winter festivities. It’s also a lot of fun. “Secret Santa” is a great way to be kind to each other. Please support our class in this fun and meaningful activity. Thank you.
To inform parents of what's going on in the classroom, curriculum, news, progress, and activities. Please ask for the Learning Schedule that goes home every Monday.
