Mr. Pham bought a pepperoni pizza for the Ring Girls & Anjali because of their wonderful Winter Talent Show act. However, these kids are picky! They want the SAME NUMBER of PEPPERONI SLICES on their pizza. Added to that, they also each want the SAME SIZE piece of pizza!!! How can you cut the pizza into 6 identical slices each with the SAME number of pepperonis to satisfy all six weird kids? Hint: Pizza slices don't have to look like the traditional triangular shape. Be creative. This is a pencil & paper question. Print out the pizza image or pick up a copy on Mr. Pham's desk to answer this question. Drop in Phamailbox by Friday. Thank you.

While spending the Winter Break at Yosemite, the Legends Rule! Boys discovered an active geyser (a hot spring of boiling water, shooting a tall column of water and steam into the air at certain times). Yosemite officials named the geyser "Legends" for their discovery. The eruptions of this "Legends" geyser are very predictable. Below are the last five eruptions: 1. at 12:00 P.M. for five minutes 2. at 12:50 P.M. for six minutes 3. at 1:44 P.M. for seven minutes 4. at 2:42 P.M. for eight minutes 5. at 3:44 P.M. for nine minutes 6. ? Can you calculate what time the next eruption will be? (Hint: There is a formula) ANSWER: "Legends!" geyser next eruption will be at: 4:50 P.M. for 10 minutes. The formula used to figure out the time until the next eruption is 4D + 30 minutes, where D is the duration of the last eruption. So... 4 x 9 + 30 = 66 mins or 1:06. Therefore 3:44 + 1:06 = 4:50. Winner: Vivian (+1), Dylan
It was Mr. Pham's birthday last month on December 25th and he doesn't want anyone in class to know how old he is unless they do some problem solving. So he designed a birthday cake that uses 13 candles that represent his age. If you count all of the triangles of all sizes formed by the lines connecting the candles, you will discover Mr. Pham's age. Can you figure it out and get a prize for getting his age correct? This question is worth 5 points! Only the most recent submitted answer will be accepted. ANSWER: The 13 candles form 56 triangles: 18 made by the six points around the edge; 20 using the full side of the two large equilateral triangles; 12 made by the four right triangles; and 6 large isosceles center triangles. Although the answer is 56, Mr. Pham's real age is much, much older!!! Winners: None :(
